Actively Working on Being Happier! Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, PhD have covered each of the fundamental components of CBT in video section 1-5 (watch them first if you haven’t!). In this video we are going to put all the pieces together by talking about two of the most important CBT tools; a journal and activity plan. These tools will help you to get the best long-term results in overcoming your problem. It will allow you to live a happier and more enjoyable life, now and in the future. Plus we have added yoga and mediation videos to our CBT toolbox! You have learned throughout this course that your thoughts have a significant impact on how you feel and what you do. However, we are often not aware of what, specifically, we are saying to ourselves. We are often aware, however, of the feelings these thoughts create. In order to better control your emotions (and not let your emotions control you), it is helpful to focus your thinking on more positive experiences. Rather than letting your negative thoughts spin out of control, you can feel happier by consciously focusing on more positive experiences. One way to do this, is by journaling. This is an excellent, structured way to create daily empowering habits. By starting the day on the right note, you will be more likely to continue your day with a positive attitude. With the help of your journal, you will start to notice that there are great moments in your life. Keeping this journal is an excellent way to cultivate your gratitude. Gratitude is the opposite of negativity, depression, anxiety and feeling low. By starting to notice glimpses of beautiful moments, you will become happier and more mindful, every day. Keeping a daily journal is also a great way to review your day. It will give you additional insight into how to make tomorrow, and every day even better. By ending the day on the right note with a positive attitude towards yourself, you will also be more likely to have a good night’s sleep. Answering the questions might seem tricky at first. However, the more you do it, the more easily it will come to you. We strongly encourage you to take the time to do this every day. Keeping this type of journal is one of the best ways to start noticing the beautiful things in your life, to change negative thinking patterns into positive ones and to feel happier. On the days when you really don’t feel like doing it...do it any way! That’s where the magic happens and where your positive thinking muscle will grow the most. Answer these questions in the morning: - Three things that I am grateful for… - How do I want to feel today? - What will I do today to feel the way that I want to feel? - Today’s affirmation, I am… Answer these questions in the evening: - Three great things that happened today… - What could I have done to make today even better? - Were there certain situations or people that triggered negative feelings and thoughts? What can I learn from this situation? Are there alternative and more positive ways of thinking, feeling and behaving? In addition to keeping a journal on a daily basis, you will fill out an activity plan. This is where you schedule certain activities, like exercise, meeting friends for dinner etc. Getting active and social is a vital step in getting a more balanced life. In the activity plan, we also recommend that you schedule when you will expose yourself to certain triggers. It will help you to confront the daily tasks that you have been avoiding. It will also allow you to challenge your problems and to achieve the goals that you set at the beginning of this program. Studies show that the simple achievement of planning your day and allocating specific times to specific activities greatly increases the likelihood of carrying them out. What are emotions from a CBT perspective? In this video, Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo, PhD will talk about the role of thoughts in your anxiety, including negative automatic thoughts and thought traps. We look at how these concepts affect you, often without even being aware of it. Learn how to change your thinking in a helpful and sustainable way, so that you can better control your anxiety and enjoy life more. Thinking is something that we all do. Sometimes our thoughts are accurate and helpful; they often are not. Often without realizing it, we consistently reach conclusions using a variety of different thinking habits, which, in some cases, can be negative. When used too often, these thinking habits can be extremely detrimental, since they skew our perspectives without us knowing. Negative automatic thoughts are realizations or thoughts that tend to jump into one’s head automatically. However, when we’re having a bad experience, these negative automatic thoughts tend to be extreme and very unhelpful. They are often distorted and present a vision of something that isn’t entirely true. Negative automatic thoughts are such a natural part of our thinking, that we don’t even notice them. Therefore, they can be hard to detect. Learning about the most common negative automatic thoughts, is vital to better controlling your thoughts. Negative automatic thoughts can lead to thought traps, or ineffective and problematic patterns of thinking. These thought patterns are often distorted and don’t take all the facts into consideration. They lead to the falsification of reality, which can result in overreaction or unnecessary emotional distress. Even if thought traps aren’t always problematic, it’s a good idea to pay attention to them and gradually learn how to deal with them. Falling into thought traps is a common trait. Even the smartest people use them, without even being aware that they are. One of the most powerful tools that CBT provides, is teaching us how to think effectively and objectively about our behaviors and emotions. It also helps us to stop thinking from a skewed or unrealistic perspective. By organizing one’s thinking patterns, we can make our lives much happier and more stress free. Here’s some common thought traps: - Catastrophizing - Extreme thinking - Demanding - Predictive thinking - Mind reading - Emotive interpretation - Labeling - Selective Observation - Anti-Positive - Personalization Remember that you have had your whole life to learn and unconsciously process negative automatic thoughts. There are many different emotions that everyone feels. Everybody is unique, and feel things in different ways. However, they can be split into "pleasant and unpleasant emotions.”. This differentiation allows you to look at emotions through the lens of whether they are helping or impeding your ability to pursue personally meaningful goals, and how effectively or ineffectively you are able to manage a particular emotion in your everyday life. We all have our own ways of describing emotions. Therefore, telling somebody how we feel, can be like speaking in another language. Even though people can understand their own emotions, explaining what you mean when you say you feel "bad" can be difficult. Therefore, creating an “emotional map” helps you and others to realize what you’re feeling without any confusion. It also allows you to start to better understand what you’re feeling. In this way, you can work towards eliminating unpleasant emotions and replacing them with pleasant ones. While we realize that it’s very difficult to sit down and think about what you’re feeling, it’s one of the best ways to start dealing with your problems. Therefore, it’s an essential part of any therapy, including CBT. This section will primarily deal with you and your emotions. It will start to help you with the process of mapping out your emotions in a logical way. As a result, you will be able to better understand why you feel the way you do. The emotional map starts with looking at what triggered your feelings. You will then explore what you did (“your behavior”), the feelings that you experienced (the “emotional diagnosis”) and your take on the situation (the “emotional conclusion”). Our unhealthy behaviors work as coping strategies. While they may seem effective at first, they cause damage over the longer term, by fueling your unhappiness. There are three main types of negative behavior. Avoidance behaviors include procrastination or avoiding problems. Mood-lowering behaviors can involve isolating yourself from your friends or not consuming healthy meals. Self-destructive behaviors may involve reckless activities or risk-taking.
