A family of steels with chromium that are commonly employed for their resistance to corrosion in aqueous settings and for service at high temperatures are known as stainless steels. The increased corrosion and oxidation resistance brought about by chromium additions distinguishes stainless steels from conventional steels. When chromium is present in ferrous alloys in proportions greater than around 11%, especially when the environment is heavily oxidising, chromium imparts passivity.
